It’s a New Year. What changes are you going to make? I suggest focusing on your mental health. Our mental health is essential to our overall well-being. As you move forward with achieving goals in this New Year, implement a 2020 Transformation with these 5 tips:
Make Your Mental and Physical Health Top PrioritiesIf you are busy like me you try to maximize your time at any cost. However I caution you to not forget your health—mental and physical. Make sure you schedule and actually go to your annual physical and vision exams in addition to dental visits. Even more so, incorporate mental health assessments with your medical provider. You may be surprised at the results in light of daily stressors we try to ignore. Be confident with any recommendations for counseling and/or medication.
Engage In Quiet ReflectionIt is essential to take time to just be. It’s a part of self-care. You don’t have to go to the spa, yoga or some expensive retreat. Simply take the time to be still. Focus on your breathing. Focus on your thoughts. Focus on simply relaxing. You literally don’t have to do anything to implement self-care. Simply, be still.
Engage Self-AssessmentI suggest completing a self assessment at least annually. This can be guided by using a SWOT analysis on your personal goals.
Write out your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. You may also like the Stacey Abram’s approach. Abraham’s (2018 Georgia gubernatorial election and Founder of Fair Fight and Fair Count) has tracked and analyzed her goals on an excel spreadsheet since she was 18. Are your goals consistent with you passion, your purpose and/or interests? If not, it may be time to change them.
Implement A Self First Is Not Selfish Mindset
Think about the safety tips you hear before you take off in an airplane. You have to put your mask on first before assisting others. Why? Because you will literally lose brain function and not be able to help yourself if you help others first. In life, we will not be able to take care of our own needs if will let always do for others first.
Expand Beyond Your Comfort ZoneHave you ever taken the time to ask yourself:
Who am I?
What is the meaning of life to me?
Your responses may change as you continue to evolve. Ultimately, you want to know where you are in life and how much you are willing to allow your self to grow. Explore opportunities that are outside your skill-set and experience. Be limitless in your approach to goal setting by avoiding negative self-talk. It is ok to engaged in constructive criticism. At the same time, take time to appreciate what you have accomplished in life and use constructive criticism to propel you to achieve beyond anything you ever imagined.
